Come Sing With Us

About Us

Our Choir is always looking for new men to join us - when it comes to singing, it's more the merrier. The rush you get when a big bgroup of blokes is singing flat out in harmony is brilliant and sends shivers down your spine.

But of course we don't sing flat out all of the time, it wouldn't be right. The choir sings a broad range of music, some really soft and quiet pieces and also some without accompaniment.

In more recent years we've been modernising our music. Gone are the days when Male Voice Choirs only sang Welsh Hymns (which do sound fantastic when sung right); we're singing songs that both appeal to our existing choir members (and hopefully to potential choir members), but also to our audiences - there'd be no point in practicing songs for concerts if no-one turns wants to hear them.

We try to mix some traditional songs with more modern music to give everyone something that they'll like. Our recent successes include singing music by Josh Groban, Queen, Leonard Cohen and Pentatonix. We are currently singing Elton John's I'm Still Standing, John Denver's Perhaps Love, Billy Joel's Uptown Girl, the Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody, Frank Sinatra's Come Fly with me and Andy Williams Impossible Dream to name just a few.

Beyond the songs that we sing though, being a member of our choir is about fun and friendship. We currently have about 50 singers in the choir and we are a big group of friends who are always willing to welcome new friends to join us.

We rehearse from early September through to our Summer Concert at the beginning of June each year. Choir practices take place on Thursday evenings between 7.30 pm until 9.30 pm and we hire the hall at the back of the Methodist Church on Northallerton's High Street. Potential new choir members can turn up on any week and we'd be very pleased to welcome you. You'll find singing with us great fun. Our rehearsals are relaxed can be a really good laugh - we take singing good music seriously, but not that seriously! You'll find that singing brings you a great deal of pleasure and can be really rewarding. However, singing with other friends lifts your spirits and can be good for your health.

We don't hold auditions and anyone can join the choir. You don't need to be able to read music but if you can, then that's brilliant. However, we teach everyone all they need to know and to help with this we prepare MP3 files of the songs we're practicing to help you to get to know them.

The choir generally sings in four part harmony with the Top Tenor section singing the highest notes, Second Tenors, slightly lower notes, Baritones singing lower notes still and Basses singing the lowest notes. We are currently recruiting new members to each of these sections of the choir, but we are particularly keen for some younger men to join us so that the choir can continue with its successes for a long time to come.

The choir performs in about 10 concerts each year and we sing in some fantastic places, such as The Sage in Gateshead and the Royal Albert Hall in London, as well as lots of local venues around the north-east. Many of the concerts that we perform are for extremely good causes, such as local and national charities and the choir has a long history of earning funds for these organisations.

Our choir is a non-political, non-religious organisation that just enjoys singing good music and raising funds for charities whilst enjoying itself. Please come and give the choir a try.
